Join us for this special afternoon and hear from our experts!

While vintage clothing stores have been around for decades, many new small businesses have found their way into the vintage market through popular social media stores like Etsy, Depop, Vinted and Ebay. Recently digital fashion marketplace Depop launched a pop-up shop in London’s Oxford Street highlighting four of their most successful sellers.

According to Jumoke Adekunle, Depop’s global brand marketing lead, Depop is on a mission to revolutionise how the world consumes fashion by making second-hand clothing fun, accessible and something that people are eager to get involved in. “The second part of our mission is that we are a community-powered ecosystem that’s kinder to the planet and kinder to people—that’s really about who we are,” she said in a recent interview with AdSense.

This accessibility has contributed to the surge of new customers and sellers to vintage markets as well. According to BBC, retail sites like Vinted and Depop have allowed young people to shop for preloved items online, opening the market to people who may not have bought or sold second-hand before.

At Viva Vintage! our keynote speaker and special guest will be Wayne Hemingway MBE from Hemingway Design. Wayne started his fashion career by selling items from his wardrobe at Kensington Market, and went on to co-found Red Or Dead. In 2010 Hemingway Design created their annual “Vintage Festival”. He is one of the UK’s most notable designers and we are thrilled to welcome him back to the BIPC Manchester.

Selling vintage can be a good “side hussle”. Some university students are using this to build their own business. Becky Stephens, who owns her vintage Instagram and Depop store, Becky’s Bazaar, has seen an increase in customers since the pandemic. Her business Instagram and Depop site now has over 17K followers.

Find out how the vintage market is growing and how you can get started. Join us at Manchester Central Library on Thursday 1 December for a trailblazing event dedicated to celebrating everything vintage.
